Carbon Accounting in supplier+s: Step-by-step guide

Follow this practical guide to calculate Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 upstream emissions with the supplier+s Carbon Accounting module. Learn how to enter data, assign suppliers, calculate results, and share insights with your customer(s).

Updated over a month ago

The Carbon Accounting tool in supplier+s makes carbon accounting easier than ever. We know carbon accounting can be tedious and time consuming, so our module streamlines the process - straightforward, simple, and fast. Due to the simplicity of the tool, there are some limitations in the depth and detail of the information provided. Nevertheless, the most important aspects of your carbon accounting are covered.

What information do I need to calculate my company's carbon footprint?

The Carbon Accounting module is designed to work with information that is readily available for most companies. Enter values for a full fiscal year.

  • Scope 1: Fuel consumption (entered in energy or mass units).

  • Scope 2: Electricity, heat, and steam consumption per country.

  • Scope 3 upstream: Company revenue and purchasing spend, plus an optional spend breakdown across categories (usually available from procurement or an ERP system). To improve Scope 3 accuracy, you can optionally add supplier information, including the countries where purchased goods and services originate.

Please refer to Summary of required data for details.

Step-by-step guide

Direct emissions (Scope 1)

  1. Click Add Activity in the top right corner.

  2. Select all relevant activities from the list. Activities are grouped into fossil fuels, bioenergy, and direct emissions.

  3. Enter the amount for each selected activity in the appropriate unit and add them.

Use Add Activity to add more inputs later, or the trash icon to remove entries.

Once done, click Continue to proceed with Scope 2 emissions.

Indirect emissions from electricity and heat (Scope 2)

  1. Click Add Activity in the top right corner.

  2. Select all relevant indirect emission activities from the list. Activities are grouped into electricity and heat and steam.

  3. Select the country where the energy is consumed.

  4. Enter the consumption values in the appropriate unit for each selected activity and add them.

Use Add activity to add more entries, or the trash icon to remove them.

When you are done, click Continue to proceed to Scope 3.

Indirect emissions from the supply chain (Scope 3 upstream)

  1. Enter your company's total revenue in thousands of USD. This field is required for your carbon accounting.

  2. We recommend to also enter the purchasing volume as share of revenue (%). This is an optional input but will help the calculation provide more accurate results. If left blank, your industry's average is automatically applied (based on the main industry selected in the Organization Profile).

  3. Please allocate your purchasing volume across the products and services you purchase. You can use Prefill Industry Data and then review and edit the values, or complete this section manually for more accurate results.

To add products or services, click Add Product/ Service. Select a proposed product or service, assign a share of the purchasing volume, and add it. You can remove activities by clicking the trash icon.

  4. Optionally, manage your suppliers for each product or service for more accurate results and insights into your emissions hotspots. Click Assign Supplier and identify the suppliers that account for the majority of your spend for the product or service you have selected.

To add a supplier, click Add new Supplier below the list. You can add a supplier you have already invited to the platform or add a new supplier by entering supplier-specific information (ID, name, country). Then, enter the percentage of spend for the product/service covered by this supplier.

After saving, a bar shows how much of that row’s spend is covered by assigned suppliers.

Finally, Calculate Results to complete the process and see your organization's carbon footprint.

Your carbon accounting results

On the results page, you can explore emissions data across scopes (aligned with the GHG Protocol), suppliers, and your products/ services.

Use Copy results to Self-Assessment to transfer aggregated Carbon Accounting results to the Organization Overview. For details on which values are copied, see Carbon Accounting: Overview and data sharing.

To gain deeper insight into your supply chain, you can invite key suppliers to the platform. Beyond any free trial, this requires a paid license or commercial agreement. For details, see the Supply Chain Management section or contact [email protected].

Please note: Supplier data is based on statistical values unless you invite your own suppliers to the supplier+s platform, which allows for more accurate results.

Common pitfalls

  • Different time periods: Use the same fiscal year across Scope 1, 2, and 3 inputs.

  • Wrong units: Double-check units before adding an entry (for example kWh vs MWh, liters vs tonnes).

  • Scope 2 country mix-ups: Make sure the selected country matches where energy is consumed, not where the company is headquartered.

  • Scope 3 spend breakdown not available: Start with Prefill Industry Data and adjust later once procurement or ERP data is available.

  • Supplier assignment confusion: Assigning suppliers improves accuracy, but it is optional. Start with a few high-spend suppliers first.
