Calculate your carbon footprint
The Carbon Accounting tool in supplier+s makes it easier than ever to complete your carbon accounting. We understand that carbon accounting can be tedious and time consuming, but the Carbon Accounting module streamlines the process, making it straightforward, simple, and fast. Due to the simplicity of the tool, there are some limitations in the depth and detail of the information provided, but the tool covers the most important aspects of your carbon accounting.
What are Scope 1 emissions?
According to the GHG protocol, Scope 1 emissions are direct greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that occur from sources that are controlled or owned by your organization (e.g., emissions associated with fuel combustion in boilers, furnaces, vehicles).
What are Scope 2 emissions?
According to the GHG protocol, Scope 2 emissions are indirect emissions from the production of energy your company purchases and uses (e.g., emissions from electricity generation for your buildings).
What are Scope 3 upstream emissions?
According to the GHG protocol, Scope 3 emissions encompass greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that occur in your company’s value chain. Upstream emissions are those generated by suppliers during the extraction, production, and transportation of raw materials or components used in your organization’s products or services.
Is the Carbon Accounting provided by supplier+s really free of charge?
Yes, the Carbon Accounting module is free of charge. You are able to calculate scope 1, scope 2, and scope 3 upstream emissions based on the provided emission factors without any costs.
Please note that there is one (optional) paid upgrade you might want to choose: the Carbon Accounting module also allows you to invite your suppliers to join you on your decarbonization journey on the supplier+s platform. This function enables you to gather primary data from your own suppliers - allowing you to improve the precision of your carbon accounting and track your emission reductions continuously over time.
We are offering a time-limited trial phase to invite your own suppliers - valid for all companies that have accepted at least one invitation from a client with a paid supplier+s license. Please refer to the Supply Chain Mangement section for more details.
Beyond our time-limited trial phase, managing your suppliers within the Carbon Accounting module requires users to obtain a paid license. The exact pricing of the license depends on the number of suppliers you want to invite. Reach out to sales@supplier-s.io for more details and a commercial offer.
How does it work? What is the method behind the calculation?
Carbon accounting requires joining activity data (from your organization) with (usually externally provided) emission factors. Those emission factors either come from statistics, or are provided by answers from your suppliers.
We use the following main sources for emission factors for the Carbon Accounting module:
Emission factors for fuels (Scope 1) and district heat (part of scope 2) are taken from UK Government, Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, "Greenhouse gas reporting: conversion factors"
Emission factors for electricity (part of Scope 2) are taken from the energy think tank Ember
Scope 3 emission factors are based on the proprietary database item+s developed by ctrl+s GmbH, operator of the supplier+s platform
If you choose to invite your suppliers to join the supplier+s platform, you can receive primary supplier data that is used to refine (or calculate) the emission factors used for your organization's carbon accounting.
The combination of activity data and emission factors follows two methodologies described and accepted by the GHG Protocol:
For energy and energy carriers (Scope 1+2), we use your input of "physical" activities (given in units like kWh or liters) and combine it with the corresponding emission factors. This method is referred to as the "activity-based approach".
For Scope 3 upstream, we use your input of "monetary" activities (given in USD) instead. This methodology is referred to as the "spend-based approach".
How reliable are the results?
The carbon accounting provided by supplier+s is based on methods, procedures and external datasets that are in line with common reporting standards like the GHG Protocol and accepted by initiatives like the CDP or Science Based Targets (SBTi).
Please note that we apply some simplifications for the calculation of scope 3 upstream emissions to ensure it is easy and straightforward to use without additional consulting support.
Please also note that we cannot guarantee a complete and correct application of the tool, since the calculation also depends on you entering correct data.
Will by sensitive data be shared with the client(s) that invited me to supplier+s?
We value your privacy and keep the input of sensitive data to an absolute minimum. Unlike the self-assessment data, the data you enter on energy consumption and procurement details will always remain private and will never be shared with any of your clients.
You may use the 'Copy results to self-assessment' function on the results page to share certain data with your clients. If you choose this option, the aggregated results data will be transferred to the Organization Overview in the self-assessment (Scope 1, Scope 2, Scope 3 upstream emissions, revenue).
Please note that you have the option to use the Carbon Accounting Module as a starting point for your Supply Chain Management and invite your suppliers to participate in supplier+s to gain more insight into their carbon performance. If you choose to do so, this will impact the data we process and share with your clients (see information in the Supply Chain Management chapter).
How is my sensitive data protected?
Sharing of data between you and any client will always require your explicit consent (see section "Will my sensitive data be shared with the client(s) that invited me to supplier+s?" above for more information about what data you can choose to share).
The supplier+s platform is operated by ctrl+s GmbH in compliance with applicable data protection requirements, particularly the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
We take data security extremely seriously. Our servers are located in the European Union, mostly in Germany. Data is end-to-end encrypted, and your data is segregated from other accounts in an independent database. We have implemented several security measures to ensure the safety of your data. Our data centers and IT infrastructure are certified with ISO27001, SOC 2 Type II, and SOC 1 Type II.
